Breastfeeding is His Safe Haven

Breastfeeding is His Safe Haven

Sister Khadijah Muhammad: 2 months postpartum

I chose to breastfeed because I found that breastfeeding is the most natural way to get nutrients to my baby, as well as a beautiful bonding experience between mother and child.

Breastfeeding has been a learning experience thus far. As a first time parent, I expected my son to latch on instantly. I figured breastfeeding was simple, but I was definitely in over my head. In the beginning it was very difficult, but after doing research on lactation, having a little patience, and prayer it became easier. My mother has been my backbone! She has taught me different techniques to breastfeed, as well as reminding me that “it’s okay”. Hearing those words are very comforting.

Along with the support from my mother, I also intake nursing supplements and use firm pillows to support my back while breastfeeding.

  • Pump it up, natural lactation and postpartum support pills
  • Eating oatmeal every morning
  • Body Armour drinks
  • Drinking lots of water to stay hydrated!
  • Earth mama, organic nipple butter cream

The two most convenient and comfortable positions for me are to lay him sideways on his Boppy and side boob feeding at night.

But why didn’t anyone tell me that breastfeeding was so time consuming? I also pump, so I had to create a schedule so I don’t wind up frustrated trying to do both.

I’ve learned that breastfeeding is a journey with no shortcuts. Breastfeeding has taught me a patience I never knew I had. Listening to nature sounds, taking a warm shower, and getting fresh air outside are all ways I take care of my physical and mental state.

My baby loves Mommy’s Golden Liquid, so he can become very fussy at times before feedings, however once he is latched a sense of relief and comfort comes over his face. He is calm. That gentle gesture affirms that I made the right choice to breastfeed, he looks to me as his safe haven. My thoughts about breastfeeding are definitely different now that I’m on my own journey. I applaud every mother for her strength to continue on this tough, but rewarding journey. It can be frustrating at times , but very rewarding in the end.

To any expecting mothers or those struggling: Do your research, Youtube was my bestfriend. Prepare for trial and error, but eventually you will get the hang of it and it will be comforting for you and baby.

What is the legacy of Black breastfeeding and how are you upholding it in your personal life?

Statistics state that Black women breastfeed at lower rates than other races as well as have the lowest duration. The legacy of Black women breastfeeding that I’m striving to uphold is I have the time. Nothing comes before the safety and comfort of my child. I also take the time to encourage other Black women to breastfeed and look into all the benefits it brings to both mother and child, overall a stronger foundation for family development.

So sweet, I love it !!! Breastfeeding is one of the most rewarding and powerful decisions I’ve made as a mother 💕 I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything . Yes I definitely had my struggles in the beginning but it got easier and easier and I’m so happy I stuck with it !
